Grab your ropes and torches crew.. we’re heading out to find the Lost Mine of Phandelver! Our first excursion using the DnD 5e system. Here’s a little background of what you will be facing
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.
Any character can drive a wagon, and no particular skill is necessary. Two oxen pull the wagon. If no one is holding the reins, the oxen stop where they are.
The wagon is packed full of an assortment of mining supplies and food. This includes a dozen sacks of flour, several casks of salted pork, two kegs of strong ale, shovels, picks, and crowbars (about a dozen each), and five lanterns with a small barrel of oil (about fifty flasks in volume). The total value of the cargo is 100 gp.
And here’s some background on Phandalin:
The frontier town of Phandalin is built on the ruins of a much older settlement. Hundreds of years ago, the old Phandalin was a thriving human town whose people were firmly allied with the dwarves and gnomes of the Phandelver’s Pact. However, the same orc horde that sacked the mines at Wave Echo Cave laid waste to the settlement, and Phandalin was abandoned for centuries. In the last three or four years, hardy settlers from the cities of Neverwinter and Waterdeep have begun the hard work of reclaiming the ruins of Phandalin. A bustling frontier settlement has grown up on the site of the old town, and is home now to farmers, woodcutters, fur traders, and prospectors drawn by stories of gold and platinum in the foothills of the Sword Mountains. Unfortunately, more than a few bandits and brigands have settled here as well, taking advantage of the fact that the area has no local lord or authority to chase them off.July 23, 2016 at 5:18 pm #2902
- Character Generation
The Lost Mines of Phandelver is an entry level module and players will start at Level 1. Because this is our first attempt with the DnD 5e system, I may make the command decision to start our characters at Level 2 to make up for the learning curve. We’ll make that decision later after we determine the strength of our party. Feel free to create your own character using the DnD 5e Players Handbook or Basic Rules. Or if you’d rather use or modify a pregenerated character, here is the link to the pregenerated characters made specifically for the Lost Mines of Phandelver HERE. As another option, the folks over at Table Topping have a full compliment of pregens that should suit your needs. Click here for Table Topping DnD 5e Pregen Characters!
As a side note, the pregen characters from the starter set have backgrounds that include minor plot hooks for this adventure. These backgrounds help to connect the PC’s to the town of Phandalin and its citizens. If you create a character other than one of the pregens, then we will most likely assign one of the pregen backgrounds to your characters.
And of course, you will need to have a general idea of the DnD 5e rules! The generous folks at Wizards of the Coast have published the DnD 5e Basic Rules in PDF format.. for free! Just click HERE!. If you want to purchase the full books or just learn more about DnD 5e then head over to the Official Dungeons and Dragons Website!
Or.. if you just want to take a look at my copies, give me a yell!

How Do I Import My Character into Fantasy Grounds?
Unfortunately, the Character Converter utility in Fantasy Grounds does not currently import 5e characters from Hero Labs. That means you will most likely have to create your character from scratch in the Fantasy Grounds “Manage Characters” module. Its not as difficult as it sounds so don’t be intimidated. Basically, just open your DnD rulebook module and drag/drop your class and other info directly into the character sheet. Here’s a good video to show you how: D&D 5th Edition Character Creation in Fantasy Grounds
If you don’t want to bother with that, I have a bunch of level 1 characters already converted to Fantasy Grounds and available for download HERE.July 23, 2016 at 8:49 pm #2906
Huh, I think this is how the DnD podcast The Adventure Zone starts before they go down a different adventure line.July 24, 2016 at 10:32 pm #2907
Say what?July 25, 2016 at 7:40 pm #2908
The Adventure Zone is a fantastic DnD 5e podcast by a few brothers and their father. They started with this same adventure line just to figure out the game.July 26, 2016 at 9:29 am #2909
Right on! I’ll check that out. Apparently this module is included in the starter set so I’m guessing most people started with it. I had a blast during our first session last night.. super casual and fun!July 26, 2016 at 5:22 pm #2910

Hi Mikey. Thanks for joining the forums! We played the first session of LMOP last night and had a full party. I’ll post it every week and you can stop by to see if one of the originals fails to show up. We will fill the empty slots from the reserves who show up. In the meantime, I’m planning on DM’ing some of the AL games over the next few weeks, so look for my posts!

Unfortunately, the original 5 players from last session have committed to attending tonite’s game so we are unfortunately full. I know that at least 1 of these players can’t make next weeks game so we will need an alternate. I will be posting next week’s game later tonite or early tommorrow. Be sure to look for it!

Sessions 1 and 2 are in the books and the party has wasted no time slaughtering every goblin on the sword coast. No PC deaths so far and we’re having a blast! Here is the party make-up so far:
Sai Lasserus – Human Rogue
Iben Wobblyn – Human Fighter
Gror Otek – Dragonborn Cleric
Zinmaris – Elven Rogue
Gorman – Half-Elf Ranger
Session 3 is scheduled for Monday, August 8, 2016 at 7:00pm PST. Be sure to catch the broadcast at http://twitch.tv/dweebfire
*Gror Otek will be absent from the party for sessions 3 and 4. Sign up at http://alonlinetools.net as an alternate!August 9, 2016 at 1:22 am #2925
depending how my game tomorrow(today) goes I may be trying to bring a level 2 human(healer) tempest cleric. I also have a (level 2)knowledge cleric build(without a body) that I’d like to try out(Yous GOTTA know never too many clerics). I have quite a few new(level 1or2) characters, so if You want to see a certain class or race or role, let Me know.. I’m not really too set on any one at this point. My early AdenturersLeague experience is pretty limited and most of the time I’ve played melee so I’m still getting a feel for the FantasyGrounds interface and how to work with it.
first up, thanks for the game tonight!
second, glad to see more of the core party.
finally, did We get any downtime for this session?
hoping to hear(here) from Yous,
